One of the most common problems that impacts the lives of men as they age is prostate problems. This means that there are many men who are looking for some form of relief for the problems associated with an enlarged prostate gland. Prosvent is advertised as a product that will help with problems related to an inflamed prostate.Prosvent is advertised as a natural supplement product that will help men with the problem of an enlarged prostate that is common with men as they age.
Prosvent uses a common approach in the world of supplements. Prosvent uses the product name to create an association with the problem or disease that it is advertised to help. Other products such as, Arthri-D (arthritis), Prostavar (prostate) and Lipozene (liposuction or weight loss). This does not mean Prosvent or any other supplement that uses this approach is good or bad, effective or ineffective, it simply means that is the marketing approach this product has is using. Infomercials most commonly focus on this marketing technique.
Prosvent contains some ingredients that have been shown to help with the problem of an enlarged prostate. Here are the ingredients that are included in a monthly supple that costs around $40 per month.
Saw Palmetto Extract – Saw palmetto extract is an extract of the fruit of Serenoa repens. It is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols. It has been used in traditional, eclectic, and alternative medicine to treat a variety of conditions, most notably benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Nettle Root Extract – While the nettle plant is well known for its stinging hairs, the root of the nettle plant is used in many herbal remedies under the name nettle root extract, stinging nettle extract or nettle oil. Herbal remedies for cough suppression, hair loss and prostate health often contain the extract of the nettle root.
Vitamin E – Vitamin E is a vitamin that dissolves in fat. It is found in many foods including vegetable oils, cereals, meat, poultry, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and wheat germ oil. It is also available as a supplement.
Zinc – Zinc is essential to sperm production, and most men can blame decreased semen volume and testosterone levels on low zinc supplies.
Selenium – Selenium is a trace element found in soil and is required to maintain good health in trace amounts. In food, the mineral is found in Brazil nuts, poultry, seafood, and meats, while significant amounts are found in oats and brown rice.
Pumpkin Seed Oil – Studies suggesting usefulness of the oil in the prevention and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia are available especially when used with Serenoa repens, saw palmetto, and Pygeum africanum. Pumpkin seed oil is most commonly used to treat irritable bowel syndrome. Some studies have found pumpkin seeds to prevent arteriosclerosis and regulate cholesterol levels.Pumpkin seed oil, commonly prescribed in German folk medicine, remedies parasitic infestations of the intestinal tract such as tapeworms. In Orastie region in Transylvania, the pumpkin-seed oil was also used as a remedy for intestinal track parasitic infestation but as an added ingredient was added fresh chopped garlic, both combined as a powerful cleanser combination.
Lycopene – Lycopene may be the most powerful carotenoid quencher of singlet oxygen, being 100 times more efficient in test tube studies of singlet-oxygen quenching action than vitamin E, which in turn has 125 times the quenching action of glutathione (water soluble). Singlet oxygen produced during exposure to ultraviolet light is a primary cause of skin aging.
In addition, a lycopene metabolite apo-10′-lycopenal, or ALA, may have an important role in the metabolism of hepatic lipids, and may prevent build up. The build up of lipids in the liver can result in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD. NAFLD can progress to more serious conditions, such as, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Given its antioxidant properties, substantial scientific and clinical research has been devoted to a possible correlation between lycopene consumption and general health. Early research suggested some amelioration of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and even male infertility. There have been several studies produced that analyzed the anti-cancer properties of lycopene.
There are some ingredients that are not contained by Prosvent, which are claimed to provide beneficial effects to users with enlarged prostate issues. Here are some examples:
Beta Sitosterol – Sitosterol is one of several phytosterols (plant sterols) with chemical structures similar to that of cholesterol. Sitosterols are white, waxy powders with a characteristic odor. They are hydrophobic and soluble in alcohols.Alone and in combination with similar phytosterols, ß-sitosterol reduces blood levels of cholesterol, and is sometimes used in treating hypercholesterolemia. Beta-Sitosterol inhibits cholesterol absorption in the intestine. When the sterol is absorbed in the intestine, it is transported by lipoproteins and incorporated into the cellular membrane. Phytosterols and phytostanols both inhibit the uptake of dietary and biliary cholesterol, decreasing the levels of LDL and serum total cholesterol. Because the structure of Beta-sitosterol is very similar to that of cholesterol, Beta-sitosterol takes the place of dietary and biliary cholesterol in micelles produced in the intestinal lumen. This causes less cholesterol absorption in the body. There are studies which show a positive effect on male hair loss in combination with Saw palmetto. In Europe, Beta-sitosterol is used in herbal therapy, especially in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).In-vitro studies on a cancer cell line suggest potential for the treatment of prostatic carcinoma.
Green Tea Extract. In a case-control study involving 130 prostate cancer patients and 274 hospital controls, men drinking the most green tea were found to have an 86% reduced risk of prostate cancer compared, to those drinking the least.
Pygeum Africanum -Traditionally used for fevers, malaria, wound dressing, arrow poison, stomach pain, purgative, kidney disease, appetite stimulant, gonorrhoea, and insanity This substance contains phytosterols. Phytosterols can inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. When you inhibit prostaglandin you can decrease the inflammation of the prostate and thereby help get relief from the symptoms of prostate problems.
Red raspberry – Red raspberry is a plant that is the source of a widely eaten, tasty, sweet berry. However, red raspberry fruit and leaf have also been used as medicine for centuries. The therapeutic use of raspberry leaf was first described in 1597 in a book called “The Herbal,” or “A General History of Plants.” Today, red raspberry leaf and fruit are still used as medicine.
Red raspberry leaf is used for gastrointestinal (GI) tract disorders, including diarrhea; for respiratory system disorders, including flu and swine flu; and for heart problems, fever, diabetes, and vitamin deficiency. It is also used to promote sweating, urination, and bile production. Some people use it for general “purification of skin and blood.”
Some women use raspberry leaf for painful periods, heavy periods, morning sickness associated with pregnancy, preventing miscarriage, and easing labor and delivery.
Red raspberry leaf is applied directly to the skin for sore throat and skin rash.
In foods, red raspberry fruit is eaten and processed into jams and other foods. Red raspberry leaf in small quantities is a source of natural flavoring in Europe.
Prosvent Side Effects
Most herbs and prescription medications are going to have some side effects. Here are some of the side effects that have been experienced.
Types of Side Effects
Saw palmetto, nettle root and zinc have the potential to cause stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, reports RxList. Saw palmetto causes dizziness and headaches, while both zinc and selenium may cause a metallic taste in your mouth.
Both saw palmetto and selenium increase your risk of developing severe or prolonged bleeding following an injury or surgery when taken with blood thinning drugs like warfarin, aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen, heparin and enoxaparin, cautions RxList. Nettles may affect how well your body eliminates the mood stabilizing drug lithium from your body, which poses a risk for toxicity from the drug.
Though rare, saw palmetto has the potential to cause inflammation of your pancreas or liver dysfunction, while selenium poses a risk for kidney or liver problems and the onset of skin cancer. When taken for periods of more than 10 years or at dosages of more than 100mcg, zinc increases your risk of prostate cancer, warns RxList, indicating that it may not be safe to use Prosvent for prolonged periods of time.
If you are scheduled for surgery within the next two weeks, have HIV, a history of skin cancer, diabetes or kidney disorders, it may not be safe for you to take Prosvent due to its ingredients.
