Alternative Medicine is growing by leaps and bounds. There are many opportunities in the world of Alternative Medicine. This post is in response to the question “What Type Of Higher Education Is Needed To Pursue A Career In Alternative Medicine?”
I live in Dallas TX and I just graduated high school. I want to pursue a career in alternative medicine such as Herbology and such, but I don’t know where to start. if anyone lives in Dallas and knows a great way in which to begin my studies or just knows, your feedback is greatly appreciated. In college, what type of major would Alternative medicine fall under? is only universities or community colleges too, or is there a special alt. med. college. Thanks everyone!
First we should as the question, What Is Alternative Medicine? While this sounds like a very simple question the answer is not so simple. The alternative medicine world is one that is vast and ranges from Ancient Chinese Medicine Techniques such as acupuncture to massage therapy. Alternative Medicine isn’t like most modern Western medical techniques and practices. Alternative medicine typically focuses on the underlying causes instead of simply treating symptoms. Practitioners of alternative medicine practitioners don’t prescribe pharmaceutical drugs or perform invasive surgeries.
The basic approach of alternative medicine is designed to bring harmony into the body, mind, and spirit of those who are being treated. This approach has been used for centuries. The idea and practice of balancing the body has been used by many cultures. The Chinese, Native American and Indian cultures have used these healing traditions.
Practitioners of alternative medicine prefer to rely on the healing properties of nature and our body’s ability self heal. In the world of alternative medicine prevention is stressed just as much as the treatment of specific illnesses. More often than not, lifestyle changes are discussed rather than the treatment of a specific illness.
Alternative medicine look at the body, spirit as well as the mind as one. In the Western view of medicine, the body is simply a grouping of organs. Western medicine attacks bacteria and viruses cause it views as the cause of disease. Alternative medicine doctors on the other hand will focus creating balance between the mind, spirit and body to heal the patient.
The basic beliefs of alternative medicine are:
A belief in the harmony of mind, body, and spirit to promote good health and wellness and to prevent illness.
Treating the symptoms of a disease does not cure the disease. The root of the illness must be addressed in order to create an effective treatment.
Imbalances in the body as a whole are the true cause of illness.
Each individual patient has different strengths and weaknesses and an individualized plan must be developed for each patient in order for them to achieve optimal health.
The doctor is an educator who teaches patients how to lead a healthy lifestyle and take care of themselves, identifying and helping to remove obstacles that must be overcome in order for good health to be achieved.
Alternative medicine is also about empowering the patient to prevent disease, instead of having to rely exclusively on a medical professional. Alternative medicine practitioners believe self-healing to be a natural process of the body. Once the patient begins to identify the environmental, emotional, and physical problems that exist within and without, and how these things relate to one another, s/he can begin to live a life that is conducive to optimal health.
There are many fields of alternative medicine available for study in traditional college or institute settings, as well as in online health degree programs. These include:
