Herbal supplements are growing in popularity as people seek out safe, natural alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs. Modern research is discovering the active ingredients in many herbs that have been used medicinally for hundreds of years. The herbs described below are widely available and recommended for particular health conditions.

Ginko biloba is a tree that grows in mountainous regions of China. Compounds in its leaves work to lower high blood pressure by widening the arteries. Improved circulation to the brain enhances concentration, alertness and memory. The herb is also a source of antioxidants which protect cells from damage and help to defend against cancer.

Gotu kola is a member of the parsley family that thrives in watery areas. Molecules called triterpenes found in the leaves have anti-inflammatory properties. Gotu kola is particularly useful for treating varicose veins. The herb increases vascular elasticity, improving circulation and reducing fluid leakage into the surrounding tissues.

Hoodia Gordonii is a succulent that grows in semi-desert areas of Africa. The San Bushmen ate the plant to curb hunger and thirst during long hunting trips in the Kalahari. Hoodia is now being used in the west to help people lose weight on low calorie diets. Studies have shown that a steroidal glycoside in the plant, called P57, works to suppress the appetite.

Milk thistle is a plant related to the sunflower. It’s seeds contain a compound called silymarin, which is effective for detoxifying the liver. Milk thistle helps to protect the liver from the damaging effects of chemicals and medications, including those used in chemotherapy. It also promotes the regeneration and repair of liver cells.

Saw palmetto is a small palm found in southeastern America. Native Americans used its berries as a remedy for male urinary and reproductive problems. Today, the herb is frequently recommended for men diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (non-cancerous prostate enlargement). It helps to improve the urinary difficulties associated with BPH.

Valerian is a plant with trumpet-shaped flowers native to Europe and Asia. The ancient Greeks and Romans used its root as a sedative and sleeping aid. Valerian is still a popular remedy for insomnia. Many people take it as an alternative to prescription sleeping pills which may become addictive with long-term use.

Although herbal supplements are made from natural botanicals, they should not be used indiscriminately. Consult your doctor before beginning herbal therapy. Certain herbs can have adverse effects when taken along with prescription medications. Some are not recommended for pregnant women or people with high blood pressure.

Causes

Increased straining during bowel movements, by constipation or diarrhea, may lead to hemorrhoids.It is thus a common condition due to constipation caused by water retention in women experiencing premenstrual syndrome or menstruation.

Hypertension, particularly portal hypertension, can also cause hemorrhoids because of the connections between the portal vein and the vena cava which occur in the rectal wall — known as portocaval anastomoses.

Obesity can be a factor by increasing rectal vein pressure. Sitting for prolonged periods of time can cause hemorrhoids. Poor muscle tone or poor posture can result in too much
pressure on the rectal veins.

Pregnancy causes hypertension and increases strain during bowel movements, so hemorrhoids are often associated with pregnancy.

Excessive consumption of alcohol or caffeine can cause hemorrhoids.Both can cause diarrhea. Note that caffeine
ingestion increases blood pressure transiently, but is not thought to cause chronic hypertension. Alcohol can also cause alcoholic liver disease leading to portal hypertension.

Symptoms

Many anorectal problems, including fissures, fistulae, abscesses, or irritation and itching, also called pruritus ani, have similar symptoms and are incorrectly referred to as
hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids usually are not dangerous or life threatening. In most cases, hemorrhoidal symptoms will go away within a few days.

Although many people have hemorrhoids, not all experience symptoms. The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is bright red blood covering the stool, on toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl.
However, an internal hemorrhoid may protrude through the anus outside the body, becoming irritated and painful. This is known as a protruding hemorrhoid.

Symptoms of external hemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a blood clot This condition is known as a thrombosed external hemorrhoid.

In addition, excessive straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the
anus may cause irritation with bleeding and/or itching, which may produce a vicious cycle of symptoms. Draining mucus may also cause itching.
