Costco Gorgonzola Cheese Recall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – November 11, 2010 – Denver – State health department officials are warning consumers who purchased Mauri Gorgonzola cheese with sell by dates January 13, 2011, and January 14, 2011, that the product has been recalled resulting is a food recall by the distributor, DPI Specialty Foods of Tualatin, Ore., because E. coli O157:H7 was found in an unopened package tested at the state health department’s laboratory.

When notified of the positive result on Wednesday, the company immediatelyissued a food recall and recalled the cheese.

The cheese was distributed only to Costco stores in Colorado. Mauri Gorgonzola cheese is packaged in clear plastic in approximately 1 lb. wedges. The recalled cheese can be identified by the following information contained on a white sticker on the package: “DISTRIBUTED BY DPI Specialty Foods Tualatin, OR, ITALY 34449″ with sell by dates of “01/13/11″ or “01/14/11.” The Costco item number is 34449.

Consumers who have any of this cheese should not eat it. They should return it to the place of purchase or dispose of it in a closed plastic bag and place it in a sealed trash can to prevent people or animals, including wild animals, from eating the product.

Colorado and several other state health departments, the CDC, and the FDA have been investigating an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections among people who sampled or purchased cheeses that were part of a “Cheese Road Show” at Costco stores Oct. 14-17.

The gorgonzola cheese was tested as part of this outbreak investigation. However, the DNA fingerprint of this cheese does not match the outbreak strain and appears to be a separate incident. To date, no illnesses associated with this gorgonzola cheese have been identified; however, consumers are cautioned not to eat this cheese.

Most people infected with E. coli O157:H7 develop diarrhea and abdominal cramps, but some illnesses may last longer and can be more severe. While most people recover within a week, some may develop a severe infection. Rarely, a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome can occur (as symptoms of diarrhea improve); this can happen at any age but is most common in children under 5 years old and in older adults. People with hemolytic uremic syndrome should be hospitalized immediately, as their kidneys may stop working and they may be at risk for other serious health problems.

State health officials urged individuals experiencing signs or symptoms of E. coli O157:H7 to immediately contact their health care provider. Health care providers also should immediately report any suspected infection to state or local public health authorities.

Costco has removed the cheese from its stores and using card purchase records, has notified consumers by phone of the situation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - November 8, 2010 – Bravo Farms is voluntarily recalling all Dutch Style Gouda because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

E. coli O157:H7 causes diarrhea illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure. Young children and the elderly are most susceptible to serious complications and even death.

The product was distributed primarily through Costco’s in Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado, and New Mexico in 1.5 lb pieces. It was also distributed through various retail stores within California sold in 8 oz pieces.

This recall notification is being issued out of an abundance of caution based on incidences reported to the FDA and CDC in these states. These entities, along with Costco and Bravo Farms are working together on the investigation and will provide further updates as they become available.

We are asking that all Bravo Farms Dutch Style Gouda not to be consumed and be returned to where it was purchased for a full refund.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – November 13, 2010 – Liz Lovely, Inc. of Waitsfield, VT, a dairy free bakery, is recalling cookie products containing chocolate or chocolate chips with undeclared dairy present in the chocolate which was purchased from a third-party chocolate manufacturer.

Liz Lovely cookie products are distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail orders. People who have allergies to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these undeclared dairy affected products.

This voluntary recall includes the following products:

Lot number for the 6oz. plastic bags is stamped on each 12-unit case box, but is not printed on each package. Lot number for the 8oz. containers is printed on a sticker affixed to each unit, along with a best-by date.

The recall was initiated after one allergic reaction to dairy was reported. Production of the product will resume on November 24, 2010 with 100% dairy free chocolate and updated product packaging. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – November 17, 2010 – Del Bueno of Grandview, WA has issued a food recall. Del Bueno of Grandview, WA  is recalling all size packages of Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese, Queso Panela Fresh Cheese, Requeson Mexican Style Ricotta Cheese, and Queso Enchilado Dry Cheese because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.  Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Del Bueno distributed the cheese to retail markets in Washington and Oregon and to the flea market in Pasco, WA.

This food recall is being issued for the following products:

• Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese, UPC 75318225028 for 16 oz. package, UPC 753182814063 for 3 lbs. package, date code up to and including Feb 10 2011.
• Queso Panela Fresh Cheese, UPC 753182814056, date code up to and including Feb 10 2011.
• Requeson Mexican Style Ricotta Cheese, UPC 753182814070, date code up to and including Jan 10 2011
• Queso Enchilado Dry Cheese, no UPC date code up to and including Mar 15 2011.

The date code is stamped on the back of the packages.  This date code is to signify the expiration date.  The cheese is packaged either in 1 lb. or 3 lbs. plastic vacuum bags.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall is the result of the environmental samples and finished product samples by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the result of the finished product samples by Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA).  The test results revealed that the cheeses are contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Del Bueno has notified their customers and has pulled the products from retail stores.  The firm is working with FDA to conduct the recall.
