Over the weekend, I decided to finally bite the bullet and swallow a whole bottle of Calms Forte ‘sleep aid’, which can be found right alongside the other sleeping pills at your local drugstore.

I know that homeopathic true believers will tell me that being able to swallow a whole bottle of pills is one of the magical wonderful things about homeopathic ‘remedies’ -taking too much does nothing. Taking too little does nothing.
I got a few things wrong in my video, which was 7 minutes entirely without script. Most of my mistakes were in the explanation of how homeopathy works, so I will explain it here:
The basic principle of homeopathy is that a substance which will create the symptoms of a disease in a healthy person will actually cure the symptoms of the disease in a sick person.
To administer a homeopathic remedy, a starting material (plant extract, dog urine, or whatever) is diluted with 99 parts of diluent (usually alcohol and water). The mixture is then “succussed” or “potentised”, which means they shake the liquid in a certain way to release the energy within the substance. This dilution is a 1C homeopathic potency. The process of dilution can be repeated with the 1C potency to make a 2C potency, then a 3C potency, and so on.
It stands to reason that of homeopathy works by dilution, and diluting a remdy increases its potency, that taking less of a remedy would have a greater effect. Yet the bottle labeling indicates that one should take 2 pills for anxiety and 3 pills for insomnia, while giving children half of this dose. If you give children half of this dose, wouldn’t it be stronger? What about licking the tablet dust from the cap?
Good double blind placebo controlled studies conclude with fair certainty that homeopathy is no more effective than a placebo. Translation: it doesnt work. There are no active ingredients. It does not matter if I lick the cap, take one pill, or take the whole bottle. There is no plausible mechanism for homeopathy to work, and the theory behind how homeopathy works defies reason, logic, and observation.
This pill-swallowing exercise was very interesting. It is amazing how we are trained to think that pills are dangerous if taken in excessive quantities. We absolutely expect an effect beyond mere intake of lactose. My friends were genuinely worried about the health outcome of swallowing these pills.
Finally, if youre contemplating suicide, please tell someone. This is probably the only life you have, so even if there is one happy moment remaining in it, your life is worth living. Barring that, if your suicide attempt is a cry for help rather than an actual attempt on your life, Calmes Forte is unlikely to have any measurable effect on you.

Otalgia or earache can occur for a multitude of reasons. The buildup of pressure in the eustachian tube is one of the top causes of earache.
